Subject : Putty for filling smally voids in a substrate?
Posted : 2005-12-20 9:16 PM
Post #32645

My substrate is birch plywood. For the most part it is smooth. In a few places around where some imperfections were patched at the plywood fatory, there are some small voids. Can anyone recommend a filler for these voids?

Do you think automotive glazing putty would work? (the stuff they apply over the bondo to fill small voids in the bondo). Thanks.

Mitch

I seem to remember a recomendation for Durham's RockHard Putty for filling dings and such in substrate. I've used it as needed with no discovered problems.

Mitch,

Automotive fillers like bondo and the stuff you're talking about can affect the adhesion of your glue. Although I have never used these products myself I have talked to a number of folks that have had glue failures with them.

Like Don said I recommend Durhams Rockhard water putty.

I've used spakle compound on walls. I does shrink. One of the main ingredients of the water putty is gypsum. so maybe the water putty and spakle compound are similar.

Carl,

I don't know about spackling compound as I have never tried it. Personally I wouldnt have a lot of confidence in it. I would be concerned about the bond between the spackle and the substrate more than between the veneer as I think the glue would penetrate the spackle pretty well.

The advantage of the Durhams water putty is that its a chemical reaction filler, you add water and after so much time it hardens up where as spackle gets hard only through water evaporation.

Carl, your the first person that has ever said they have used spackle so I have no other reports on its effectiveness. You may be fine.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
