Subject : bent lamination or veneered panel?

I am making a box that will have sides that are curved and fluted. I was thinking about making it by using a solid board. I would cut the fluting while the piece was flat and then cut the board into thin slices on the bandsaw. Then I would take the whole thing and glue it up and bend it over a form in the veneer bag. I was wondering if I would encounter movement problems over time since the outer faces of the panels would not be an even thickness? Would it be better to use bendy ply in the center instead of solid wood (with the fluting, the outer faces would need to be around 3/16" - 1/4" thick and I assume the other face would need to be that thickness as well)?

If I use an all solid wood construction is that considered to be just a bent lamination instead of a veneered panel?

Thanks for any advice.

Peter,

I dont think you will have any problems doing it as a bent lamination but I could give you a more definite answer if you told me the dimensions of you part and the radius.

Thanks Darryl. One side is 17" long with a 7' radius and the other is about 3' long with a 31' radius.

Peter,

How wide are these two parts?

Darryl,

The first panel is 17" long and 16" wide with a 7' radius.
The second panel is 3' long and 16" wide with a 31' radius.

Thanks,

peter

Peter,

Now that I understand the overall size of the panels I would definitely do it as a bent lamination in solid. These panels are too wide to have a bending ply core with solid outer layers. At this thickness the core cannot overcome the movement of the solid to assure a stable panel. The outer layers would have to be under 1/8" to work with the bending ply core. Personally I would prefer a lamination with the bending ply core for a more stable panel but I gather your flutting prohibits a thin outer layer.

I assume you will be bandsawing the pieces at 8" and edge gluing them together to get 16".

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
