Subject : Making Two-plys

I have a couple of questions about making two-plys. I want to make a couple of two-plys that I'll then add to either side of a curved form. I understand that I need to do all of my presses in the same day from previous posts.

My questions:
1. I want to use Unibond. How long should I press the two-plys, and is it OK to start sanding them as soon as I get them out of the press?
2. Everything I've read on veneering says that you should glue the substrate, not the veneer. Here, I've got no choice. I'm going to have to glue veneer. Won't this result in wavy veneer? Am I just assuming that the waviness will be pressed out of the piece?

You can take the two ply out of the bag when the left over glue has turned to firm rubber.

Sanding and scraping could be a little dicey. If you want to really be sure about how soon you can sand I would do a sample first and try it at the firm rubber stage.

Remember, you dont need to do the same day pressing onto your panel with two ply unless the radius is rather small, under 8" in my opinion. If you decide to let the glue cure overnight make sure you put a sheet of plywood on top of it or just leave it in the press. If you let it sit around to cure unweighted it will curl up like a potato chip.

Yes, you will obviously have to glue one of the veneers when creating two ply. I masking tape the corners of the backer veneer to my glueing table and roll the glue on that veneer. It wont curl that much, especially with Unibond 800.

Hope this helps

Darrly,

Thanks (and welcome back). We ended up trying this last week, and it mostly worked out very well. We had one issue - a spot where it looks like some glue pooled, so we ended up with a wavy spot we had to deal with. We may have used a bit too much glue, and we'll adjust this in the future, but I'm also wondering if this might be because we tried to glue up both of our two-plys and press them at the same time. Could this cause the glue not to all get squeezed out to the edges?

Paula,

Before I give you my assessment of what I think happened I have a question. What did you use as a seperator between your two sets of two ply's? I'm assuming you stacked them on top of each other.

Oops, I should have mentioned that.

Yes, we put cauls above, below, and between the two-plys. Also (in case this makes a difference) a piece of plastic between the middle caul and the top two-ply, since I was using coated fiber board as a caul and only one-side was glue-resistant.

Paula,

Im going to guess it was a little too much glue. I dont think that glueing up two at a time was the problem since you put a rigid caul between the two.

Remember, two ply doesnt have much depth to absorb the glue like veneer onto a panel so careful glueing is more important.
