Subject : how to cut other than straight lines in veneer

I am working on a project where I am to have 14" circle patterns on 14" square doors, where the area surrounding the circles is to be of contrasting veneers.

Not really sure how to get clean seams ... use mdf templates & a flush-trimming bit?

Any info or advice would be greatly appreciated!

If I were doing a production run (4 or more) of what you describe, I would take the time to make circle templates out of MDF. The challenge here is getting the outer circle template to match the inner perfectly.

If I were only doing 3-4, I would use a jig that I made...it's pretty simple. I have a chisel mounted on a stick that attaches to a trammel point. I use a block with either cork or sandpaper adhered to it to keep it from slipping. The trammel point goes into this block...the block is in the center of your project.

Be sure not to use a scalpel. The blade will flex and follow grain...I learned this the first time I tried this....go with a super sharp chisel.

There's many other ways....someone might have another suggestion.

I would make a pair of templates from mdf and sandwich the veneer between them. Then use a flush cutting router bit and trim to size. Alternately, use a piece of 1/8 inch masonite somewhat larger than the veneer to support it and trim the masonite and the veneer at the same time. A little bit of rubber cement might come in handy to keep the veneer from shifting. I've used this technique to joint burl veneers against a straightedge.

i would go to a local shop with a cnc router and have them cut the parts, probibly would cost less than 100 dollars, money well spent,

you'd be surprised what you can do WITHOUT CNC machinery...
get yourself an inlay guidebushing kit and setup an accurate router (not PC, something that aligns like Bosch) use your vac to hold pieces to templates as you cut... follow me?

Whatever method you use, you should also consider lining the areas of the veneer that will be cut with blue masking tape or veneer tape. The tape will reinforce the veneer and help prevent splintering.
