Subject : Veneering compound curved surfaces

I need to veneer a convex surface that is also ring or round shaped, I have seen examples of this in some rather old furniture, so I know it must be possible. I am thinking that the veneer is to be treated in some way first to make it flexible enough. Anybody? Thanks

I think that we might need more details...

What do you mean by ring or round shaped? A tube?

Also, let us know some dimensions...

Getting veneer to bend is pretty easy, but I think that we need more details and description....

A wooden ring 8" in diameter 3" wide. The inside is flat, the outside is curved ). I wish to apply a veneer to the out side of this ring, overlaping in the back. Appreciate it!

Lou,

Brians question cleared up a few things but I still have more question. Whats the radius of the outside curve and what veneer do you plan on using?

If you could take a digital picture of this ring and attach it to your responding post that would be most helpful.

Sincerely

Darryl, The ring is 3" wide on the flat side and arcs out to 5/16". It also has an opening, not being a continuous ring until finnished. I plan on using B.E. Maple veneer for the face. Sorry, I can't provide a photo. Thanks!

Lou,

If I'm seeing this right you can do it by applying the glue to the back of the veneer and very lightly misting the face side with water. Applying the glue to the veneer in this case will help it to become more flexible along with the misting. Once in the bag massage the veneer right through the bag as it draws down, concentrating on any difficult areas. I stop and start the pump as it pulls down massaging when the pump is off. Try it with a sample first but put wax paper or plastic between your test veneer and the ring so it wont adhere. This will give you a feel of how it will work.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
