Subject : Madrone Burl over 1/4 Plywood

Dear Veneer God,

I am new to vacuum pressing, though I am familure with general veneering. I will be pressing panels for use as a door panel. I would like to apply a Madrone Burl over a 1/4 inch "Cherry Flinch Faced" (cherry on the inside of door and burl on the outside) plywood. In an effort to save time, I would like to forgo applying a balance veneer and a counter veneers. In speaking with my veneer supplier, they suggested that I could get away with not using a counter veneer, specifically due to the fact that I will be applying a Burl. Can I get away with not using a Balance Veneer, my 1/4" plywood is perfectly flat and the largest panel is roughly 18" x 22"?

Thank you.....Randy

I'm not sure of your terms. What do you mean by counter veneer? I assume balance veneer means a veneer on the back to balance the panel.

I would balance the back of the plywood for these reasons:
-the panel is large for its thickness
-the extra glue line (more than the burl) will inhibit moisture transfer

I would tend to use madrone burl on the back, it's not that expensive, though I have used other cuts to balance burls. I think the glue line is more the issue than the tensile strength & moisture resistance of the veneer itself, though I'm guessing.

About the only time I don't balance is when I'm making a "bulletproof" construction: like f'rinstance 3/4" substrate with a big torsion box underneath it.

Randy,

I second what Jim said about veneering both sides, especially on 1/4".

As far as cross banding goes, I do think you can get away without adding that. Be sure to use a urea resin glue not a yellow glue for burls.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

My original goal was to use the 1/4" Cherry plywood as my groundwork, with the existing Cherry veneer as the inside of the panel. Upon reviewing your comments and doing more research, I ordered Cherry flinch. My new approach is to use 1/4" MDF as my groundwork and to apply a Cherry veneer on one side and the burl on the opposing side. My customer would like Cheery on the inside of the door, eliminating the possibility of using the burl on both sides. Any suggestions of comments.

Veneering is relatively new to me,although I have read four books in the last week, I feel somewhat intimidated. I ordered both videos from Vacu Press, hopefully it will help me in this process.

I always suggest doing a test piece if you are trying a new technique. If you have enough of the burl, make up one panel the size you need and see what happens after a day or two. If it is ok you can use it if not you might be able to cut it up and make a small box out of it. Steve

Your new approach should work fine...

1/4 mdf with burl and cherry on opposing sides.

There aren't very many instances where you should not veneer both sides....it's not that much of a pain, and it keeps panels stable.
