I have two suggestions.
First, dont use three hole veneer tape, its not particularly strong. I would use no hole veneer tape, it has much better holding power.
My other suggestion is to glue the veneer edges together prior to pressing. This is the solution I recommend in your situation. After you apply the masking tape, fold the veneer back on itself at the taped seam and apply a bead of yellow glue. Lay the veneer back flat and wipe off the squeeze out on the glue side. To assure the veneer is level at the joints put it in your vacuum press for a few minutes, this will be enough time.
I use this method whenever I have trouble holding the veneer joint together.
