Subject : Single component alternatives to Unibond

I am in the process of building a frame and panel desk. With the exception of the frame all components will be veneered. I have traditionally used Unibond for all my veneer work, however I tend to waste a great deal when gluing up small panels. I would like to use a single part adhesive for the panels contained within the frame. I am considering using either Titebond Extend or a product that the Woodworkers Supply Store offers called Flexible Sheet Veneer Adhesive (FSV). The panels will be pressed in a vacuum bag and will not have any seams (MDF core). Am I asking for trouble? Any recommendations on the two suggested adhesives or are there better alternatives out there? Any tips for vacuum bagging with evaporative cure adhesives?

Thanks,
Tom C

Tom,

Well, a PVA glue is not as rigid as a urea resin glue but that doesnt mean its bad, just not the same level of adhesive. I use PVA's sometime when I feel a urea is not needed. Titebond Extend is an acceptable veneering glue in my opinion.

The main thing when working with PVA glues is to move fast. These glues begin tacking up as soon as the veneer comes in contact with the substrate. Wait too long before you are under pressure and you can have a wrinkling problems.

Sincerely

Darryl,
Thanks for the response. Also as DKA mentioned sorry about asking for your advise on products that you do not carry. I am still sold on Unibond. Excellent product and you provide a great service.

Thanks again,
Tom

I attended a class with Michael Fortune at Marc Adams Woodworking School. Michael is a world-class furniture builder who uses a lot of veneer. He recommended a PVA sold by Veneer Systems (www.veneersystems.com) called MPA for Veneer. It has ground pecan shells in it to reduce bleed -through and is a one part adhesive.
When something is recommended by someone of Michael Fortune's reputation, I had to try it and I've been very happy with it. However for curves and structural pieces, I still always use Unibond.
I hate to go on Darryl's forum and recommend a competitors product, sorry Darryl.

Tom and DKA,

It’s completely OK to use this forum to further and share knowledge about veneering, no matter what products are mentioned in the process. This forum is not about promoting any particular product, mine, or anyone else’s. It’s about information for the benefit of all. Of course, in the process of sharing information we will talk about the products we use and like, it should be that way.

Personally I am partial to urea resin glues for a number of reasons, hence the development of Unibond. When I talk about this type of glue I always say "urea resin glue" instead of "Unibond 800" (unless the question is specifically about Unibond) because I don’t want this forum to become or appear to be a sales tool for any products. The only time I would ever interfere or delete a post is if someone is clearly using this forum for advertising.

I will always welcome other views on this forum; we all have different ways of doing things. I love the idea of using a Fein sander with a blade attachment for cutting veneer, never would have thought of that one. Tried it after reading the posts on this site and it works great. Glad I get to learn things here too. I also like to stay out of the discussion sometimes, great to hear other folk’s experiences and perspectives, not just mine all the time.

Most of all I’m glad this forum has become a great resource for fellow woodworkers. The more we share the more we all benefit.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

I've had very good results with Titebond Cold Press Veneer glue. Available at the local Rocklers.
