Subject : Veneering one side only?

I'm building a bookcase whose sides are double-walled. I'm building them with two 3/4" MDF panels separated by dadoed crossribs. My question is can I get away with only veneering the visble side of each panel without fear of warping?

Here is a picture for clarity's sake:

I don't think that anyone here would tell you to go ahead and try it.

You'll always make a panel unstable by only veneering one side.

The larger the panel, the more warpage, and it looks like your panels are pretty long, there.

As a learning experience, do this....

When pressing up your project, veneer both sides of your project pieces, but take one piece that is scrap, and veneer one side, just as an experiment. You'll be able to see what would happen. And don't waste a lot of material doing this....a piece bigger than one foot will probably be enough, even in 3/4 MDF, I'll bet.

And try different thicknesses....you'll see that the thinner, the more warpage.

I was hoping that because these two panels are "structurally" tied together the forces involved would be held in check. I have veneered speaker cabinets in a single sided fashion and they turned out perfect. I'm assuming it's because all six sides of the cabinet are "structurally" tied together they stabilize each other.

Dan

Dan,

I have tried to look at you project on the web address you have given but cannot make it work. Is it not right or am I missing something?

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Darryl,

As far as I can tell the link to the bookcase plans works but just to be on the safe side I emailed you a copy.

Regards,
Dan

Dan,

Now that I have looked at what your making I will break my rule about two sided veneering and say in this case you would be ok veneering only one side. Since the two pieces will be opposing each other you should balance out the warping issue. Just make sure you put the blocking pieces often enough to prevent possible warping.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
