Just wondering if anyone has had experience adding wheat flour to Urea?
I've been doing this for a while to thicken the glue to reduce bleed through. It seems to work well and does not change the strengh of the glue. I add about 3-5% by weight. Just interested to know what others think?

Honestly, I think that urea resin is thick enough. I think that if it's thicker, I might have trouble getting a nice even coat.

Also, I make sure that my adhesive is dyed to match the color of my background veneer, so any bleed-through is less visible.

One other thing....do you really think that a slightly thicker adhesive will really make a difference on the bleed-through when you've got the tremendous power of a vacuum press working on it? I think that if there's a gap, the vacuum will pull ANYTHING through, regardless of thickness.

Just my 2 cents, and really, I'm just thinking out loud....maybe I should try your method before shooting it down....peace.

Yes I've found it really does help to reduce bleed through. Try it and see what you think. The glue can still bleed through, but it helps to reduce this.

I will....I do find that sometimes a problem that I have to live with, is when I have light marquetry on a dark background....any bleed-through effects the lighter marquetry if I'm not careful.

Thanks.

Anton,

Here's my information on adding wheat flour. Wheat flour is used in urea resin glues to increase the overall quanity of glue by adding wheat flour and water which increases coverage at a cheaper cost, lowers quality as well but large plywood manufacturers use a lot of urea and adding wheat flour and water up to a point makes the glue go farther which saves money. The better choice for bleed through would be to add shell flour which helps to block the grain pours to reduce bleed through. Using wheat flour absorbs liquid to achieve your results which would be better used in bonding. Its not that using wheat flour in this way is all bad but using shell flour is better. What ever you use dont go over 5 percent of the resin quantity. There is always a compromise in trying to reduce bleed through. The trade off is good penetration, so keep it to a minimum.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Where do you purchase shell flour or wheat flour? Web address or email please.
