Subject : Using a vacuum veneer press to laminate radius millwork

Has anyone used a vacuum veneer press to laminate radius millwork? Construction of window heads by gluing up 1/8 Birch, 1/4 Luan and an outside 3/8 Luan. This has been done with conventional presses, but can it be done by putting the laminations in a vacume bag and clamping the package to a radius form?

Radius can be as small as 12", or as large as 36" (2' and 6' diameter respectively). Also, laminated jamb material may be bent over an elliptical form.

Any help would be appreciated.

Wally,

This can definitely be done with a vacuum press, just the way you described. All the laminations go in the bag with a bleeder fabric, a very low vacuum is drawn and then the bag with laminations are bent over the form. When its in place, then full vacuum is drawn. Eliptical forms are a little harder because the change in radius means more clamping to the form until everything is in place. With a true radius form only one clamp on either end is usually needed.

Thanks for the tip. What, exactly is bleeder fabric. My assumption is that it is fabric placed in the bag to absorb squeeze out, etc. If not, please enlighten me. Well, enlighten me anyway. I'm here to learn.

Thanks.

Wally,

Bleeder fabric is meant for air evacuation not glue absorption. You must have some efficient means to get the air from all corners of the bag down to the exit hole.

Thanks for the info. After thinking about it, I figured that out - - what works well as bleeder fabric?

www.vacupress.com Click in the left margin on "Accessories"; on the Accessories web page at the top click "EvacuNet" for such a product.
