I've got an interesting project doing a pair of nightstands that are a tapered elliptical cylinder. The dimensions are 24"w x 20"d x 25"h. I intend to laminate two layers of 3/8" bending ply for the substrate, and I think I can veneer the inside of the tube prior to bending, while it is still flat. The outside of the tube is where I'm not sure of the best method. Do I put the tube around the form and press the veneer in the bag or not? Oh yeah, the cylinder has a drawer and an open section underneath it so I don't have to join the bending ply. Any wisdom greatly appreciated.

Dear Jason,Be aware that your 3/8" bending ply will not bend very well once you veneer one side, so pre-veneering in the flat will not really work. As far as the outside veneer, I would laminate the two 3/8" bending ply's together on top of the form, in the bag. Then put it all in the bag again to glue on the face veneer.SincerelyDarryl Keil: I've got an interesting project doing a pair of nightstands that are : a tapered elliptical cylinder. My question is would you also need a backer veneer?Sincerely,Frank P

DarrylThanks for the advice. What about the veneer on the inside, if doing it in the flat wont work? My previous experience with veneering between the form and the substrate didn't work well. It seemed as though the pressure was inadequte betweeen them.

Dear Jason,I have veneered many a project with the veneer between the form and curved panel. If your form is properly built and you make sure the panel goes back on the form in the exact same spot as the first time ( the time when you formed the panel) you should get good results. The only concern with your panel, is that if it goes almost all the way around that could be a little more difficult. I would suggest making a two ply and pressing that between the panel and form. Two ply is stiff and stable enough that if there were any areas that did not bond properly it would not transfer through to the face veneer. There is one more way which is to use a inflatable bladder inside the panel instead of the form. You would still put the panel in a vacuum bag with the bladder inside the panel, it would inflate and press your veneer to the inside. You may want to call me for more explanation on this one. The surface of the 3/8" bending ply is quite rough. I'm concerned about this telegraphing through the birdseye veneer(no paper back)Should I do anything to prep this surface for veneer?
