darryl,

good seeing you at IWF.

i have to make some flat door panels that are magnetic - thinking seriously of using thin sheet metal and veneering that to MDF, and simply veneering the face of the steel. outside of roughing up the steel and cleaning it with acetone, can you envision any issues with this plan, and will unibond work?

thanks,

--- dz

Have you experimented to find the minimum thickness that will work for the application (magnets?), and do you have a method for cutting the sheets that will leave them very flat?

I've always had good luck using polyurethane glue when bonding to metal. I would think that unibond would be too brittle. The steel will expand and contract differently than the wood so you must anticipate that and deal with it. Be sure to wrap your work in plastic sheeting to keep the poly glue off the vac bag. Especially if you have a poly bag. Also, a plasma torch could distort the thin metal sheet. Have it sheared by a sheet metal shop or the supplier. Plan on the metal not being cut to an exact size. That sort of work simply isn't in their vocabulary.

I'm going to agree with Jeff's suggestion of polyurethane, or maybe epoxy. Unibond 800 is not the glue to use as it needs porosity with both surfaces to achieve a good bond.
