Subject : Making a Round Table Rim For Veneering

A potential cusstomer this morning was expressing interest in an approximately 33" diameter tray, veneered top and bottom, with a veneered rim perhaps 1 1/2" total height (3/4" above surface of tray) and 3/4" diameter. I've been pondering how I would make such a ring. Thinking that a built up ring using a number of laminations of 2" x 1/8" bending poplar plywood, with the end joints staggered, would be the best approach. But even with a solid circle pattern against which to vacuum press the laminations is somewhat daunting. Is this going to be a nightmare? How many added layers of the bending ply as caul would be adviseable for pressing each layer of the laminations? My glue would be plastic resin. If a veneered rim is undertaken, a "french edge" would be used for the exposed edges of the rim, to protect the edges from chipping. Thanks to Craig for explaining the french edge many years ago. My understanding is after veneering all the surfaces, rout a 1/4" x 1/4" rabbet, then glue in solid wood.

If it was me and I was wanting to make one continuous ring I would not do it in a vacuum press, I would do it with band clamps. A vacuum press will try to grab all the way around at once. After the ring was glued up then I would veneer with vacuum, and not all at once. I think two layers of 3/8" bending ply as the caul should do the job.

I would be thinking lay up something just over half the circle and twice the width then rip the piece in half and on a drawn circle splice the two halves together, then veneer, or veneer first, I have a picture frame I joined up this way, laying up something 5in wide by 2 or 3 thicknesses of ply on just over a half circle is more reliable than trying to do the whole circle, by going over the half circle you can cut off any ends that may have a flatness about them, if you go whole circle how about a tie down that the truckies use you can ratchet a lot of pressure on them, just use a loose piece of bendy ply where the ratchet is.
I found vacing thick narrow laminates the bag grabs the edge with more pressure than is on the narrow surface where you want the pressure, and the risk is the breather fabric or the bag gets caught where you don't want it, I did once ratchet down a curve with a 2in wide strop then put a bag over the top it had its own problems with being air tight but was a success. All just thoughts, good luck. Bob S

Much thanks for very helpful replies. This came up unexpectedly and I did not think through the process enough before coming to the forum.

While pondering this yesterday, I began to wonder how I would run veneer on the flat top of a ring anyway. Now I'm wondering if I should promote an octagon rim of solid wood instead.

Its not as hard as you think. Rather simple actually.
