I'm going to be gluing up 18 plies of alternating holly and ebony (for a jeweler friend to carve.) I don't think I have time to attempt to do the whole pile at once so will break it up into smaller batches (how many layers?) and then glue it all together - will I have trouble getting this all nice and flat in the end? I assume vac bagging with platen on bottom and top is the best way? Is crossbanding necessary? It would waste some very expensive ebony if it was The final pile would end up being only end up being about 6" x 6". Right now I have 8 plies, 6" x 12" ready to be glued up and cut in half.

Thanks!

Well I just took out a sample glue up after 2 hours in the bag - four plies of ebony/holly. The holly surface is wavy. Too much glue? I've got $100 worth of ebony that I don't want to wreck!

Thanks.

If your using urea resin you can do them all at one time. The waves are probably due to not enough clamp pressure. Due to the small size I would with went with c-clamps or parallel clamps.

I'm using Cold Press Titebond. Urea resin will give me more time, huh? I had thought of c-clamps and a couple of small cauls.

I'll do it. Thanks.
