Hey everyone,
I was asked by a custom cabinet company to provide a price per square foot in veneer labor costs. I've been out of the veneering loop for a while now. Can anyone help me with an average cost per sq. foot in labor?
The product to be produced is a smooth panel door with solid edges.
Here is what I figured the steps and time would be for 1 sq. ft.:
- mill the subcore 10min.
- mill solid edging 1/8" x 3/4" 30min.
- edge subcore with edging 10mins. cutting 1hr. dry time
- sand edging flush 15min.
- mill veneer for front and back. 15min.
- tape veneer for front and back. 15min.
- press veneer front and back. 1hr. dry time
- trim veneer bothsides. 10min.
- sand both sides 150 grit and 220 grit. 20min.
Total time for 1 sq.ft. 4hrs and 55min. (say 5hrs.)

Shop rates
$30hr. $150/sqft.
$35hr. $175/sqft.
$40hr. $200/sqft.

I must be something wrong!! These prices seem way to high!!
Can someone offer me some sqft guidance.

Thanks

Consider estimating total time/material/cost for an average order from the company, then divide by the total square feet. To some extent, the larger the run the lower the cost per square foot. Of course, you might want to qualify your bid by saying it's for an order of ___ size, and the cost per square foot may be higher for smaller orders. And I couldn't tell from your figures if you were charging for drying time.

My thoughts are similar to Don's. A door 4 sq ft would pretty much take the same amount as 1 sq ft. I bet 6 - 4 sq ft doors would cost less to make that one door that size. I think the sq ft approach is not realistic. A whole job quote makes more sense to me.

Ditto Don and Darryl. You start throwing numbers like 150-200 sqft and the client and the veneer craft starts to look stand-offish . If your unsure then the hourly rate would be the way to go, but even that makes people a little uncomfortable if you cant tell them how many hours the job will take. Quoting the whole job puts the client at ease.

What your hourly rate should be would be determined by your overhead and burden.

Bidding the job as a whole makes much more sence.
Thank you for the input!
