I am new to vacuum pressing, so I have a couple of very basic questions. After gluing up a bent lamination using Unibond 800 glue, there is some squeeze out residue on the inside of the bag that I'm having trouble removing. I've tried gently flexing and scraping and wiping with a damp rag, with very little success. Is there a safe and effective way to clean urea-resin glue residue from the poy bags? Second, after removing the forms from the bag, there appears to be some degree of permanent deformation to the bag. Is this normal? And, is there a way to safely help get the bag back to its original flatness?

Jim,

Glue, once on the bag is not easy to remove. The best approach is a paint scraper. I actually dont bother with glue on the bag except right at the closure where its important to get a good seal. Better to do preventative measures like use shrink wrap or 4mil drop cloth plastic over your project so glue doesnt get on the bag in the first place. A vegetable spray called "Pam" can be wiped on the inside of the bag so glue wont stick to it.

As far as bag stretching, to a large extent it will relax back as you press other thing of different sizes and shapes. What you do want to do on curved work is to tuck the bag close to the form as its being pulled down. The more the bag spans from the platen to your form the greater the chance for stretching. Also, dont press the same thing over and over again in the exact same spot. As far as stretching, as with glue adhesion, I'm not really bothered about it unless its severe. The bag will fuction just as well with a little stretching. Wrinkles here and there on top of what your pressing really don't matter and when you doing veneer you always have a caul on top anyway.

Darryl,

Thanks. Other than just trying to carefully scrape the glue off, is there anything that will soften the glue so that it's easier to remove, that won't damage the bag?

Well, a blow torch would work, but then.... Really though, anything that might remove the glue would destroy the bag so it just manual scraping. If its yellow glue you can soak the area with a rag and it will soften, but not with Unibond 800, its a catalytic glue which cant be softened. Like I said before, I wouldnt be concerned about it. Your bag will press just has good with some glue streaks on it. I understand you want to keep you nice new bag extra clean. Just cover with plastic in the future.

Darryl,

Thanks, again. Often, knowing what won't work is just as helpful as knowing what will.
