Pressers:

Finally going to have to try pressing two ply for a baltic birch door panel and not sure my memory is all that good (actually, I'm sure it's not as good as it once was).

Two ply on each side, alternating grain direction of course. Outer sheet will have solid brown veneere tape on show side, inner sheet 3 hole veneer tape facing outer sheet.

Each layer will be quartersliced maple, using urea formaldehyde glue. I'm hoping to press both pair of plies at once, starting in the AM. Bottom 1/4" melamine caul on top of platen, one two ply, 1/2" melamine caul, other two ply, top 1/2" melamine caul.

3/4" x 3/4" maple edge banded baltic birch core will be thickness sanded earlier on 42" drum machine at a friend's workshop.

What are the pros and cons of immediately gluing the pair of two plies to the core overnight, while the plies are still flexible, versus letting the pair of two plies air cure overnight and then pressing to the core the next day? Or is the latter asking for trouble as the glue will get rigid overnight?

Cranky in Cincinnati

The doors are abour 23" x 14" and thus somewhat manageable in size. Should I skip separate pressing of the two plies and just apply the four layers of veneer directly to the substrates in one pressing?

Hi Don,
I'd recommend doing the 2-ply separately. Problem is how to apply the glue evenly to just the veneer if you're trying to do it all at once, as it does start to curl as soon as glue is applied. Plus I'd think that much more difficult to keep things lined up with an extra layer with wet glue slipping around. Darryl's trick that I now use is to make the underlayer of the 2-ply slightly larger than the show veneer, so that it's edges can be taped down to the bottom caul (I use packing tape). This greatly aids in keeping it down flat while rolling the glue onto it.

As far as leaving it overnight before pressing, that shouldn't be a problem. Just don't leave the 2-ply "out" to cure, must leave it under a caul. Otherwise will curl up as the glue dries, and I find is extremely vulnerable to cracking when then trying to unroll it. But if left under a caul, it is still flexible enough to apply to curved forms.

Personally, I don't like leaving veneer tape between the 2 layers either. Definitely weaker than just wood on wood, and I don't like to take any chances on the show veneer. So I use 2-hole tape on the underside of the backing veneer, and then remove it before gluing the completed 2-ply to the substrate.

Actually I just don't much like 3 hole tape, as I find it disintegrates so easily just trying to get it off the veneer tape dispenser once wet. It just doesn't seem to hold a seam that well either, especially if the veneer is anything but dead flat.

As I know you like to say, just my 2 cents.
Good luck.

Enrico

Don,

If you do want to use the 3 hole tape, I would put it on the back side of the backer veneer so it gets buried against the substrate rather than the against the face veneer.

I would go with Enrico's approach. If I understand you correctly this is a flat panel and even if it was a curved one it would have to be a fairly tight radius to be concerned about the two ply not bending enough.

As usual, I would have made a Laurel & Hardy of things. At this point I don't have too much extra width, maybe 1/2" each way, but I will use that little bit to tape down the backer layer. And yes, I would have put the 3 hole tape against the face veneer rather than against the substrate. Hope to press the test two plies Thu and press them to the test door panel Friday.
