I want to make an oval table apron using bending ply for the core & then re-sawn veneers on the inside and outside – approx dimensions are 36” on the long axis x 23” for the short axis. Just looking for any advice to do so in a vacuum bag – how to set it up so pressure is on the sides rather than top & bottom. Or should I build an interior and exterior form and use clamps all they way around? Thanks for any suggestions.

Jerry,

Do the table legs reach all the way to table top so there are actually four aprons, visually speaking, or is the apron seen all the way around?

the legs will be added later - planning to fabricate some bent legs and use a saddle style joint to attach them - was thinking the apron would be a continuous piece.

The reason I ask is because the apron will be a lot easier to make in four pieces and then tenon into the legs. You would make two different shaped forms, since its an oval, and stand the forms up in the bag so most of the force is downward rather than sideways.

You could make one larger half oval form and still stand it up in the bag. You'll just have to make a narrower platen so the bag can easily get around everything.

thanks darryl - i like the idea of a half oval form - build up a form for the under side and then use breather mesh on top.
