Any advice on using hydrated lime and dyes over mahogany when there is light colored inlay involved? Hydrated lime will not stain holly inlay, but if i want to further enhance the color by using trans tint brown/yellow, the inlay is affected. I have tried a pre-coat of lacquer over the inlay to seal it, but i still had problems with staining the inlay after dye application. Could really use some help! Thanks

When faced with this type of situation years ago Jeff Jewitt suggested covering the light inlay with auto pin striping tape which is flexible and available in a number of different widths. Had to spray the dye, which wouldn't push it under the tape as wiping would have. Can't remember the details, may have sealed the inlay with shellac prior to taping, and used alcohol soluble dye. Turned out very well.

Balzy,

I understand your dilemma and my solution was to mask off the inlay as you described and spray a number of coats. Even then I noticed the finish over the inlay would get stained to some extent. I would take care of this problem by carefully using a cabinet scraper to remove the tainted finish and reveal a clean inlay. The key was enough coats of finish to seal the inlay thoroughly and to build it up enough to be able to scrape without effecting the surrounding veneer.
