I have a book by a British author that gives a formula for a veneer flatening solution that uses cascamite glue. This glue also called one shot appears olny to be available in Britain. What is a US substitute?

The book also times some operations by saying break for a cup of tea. Will coffee work?

Brent,

Cascamite is a glue that has been around a long time but not in use much anymore. Urea resin glue has replaced it for the most part and is a better glue anyway. You mix Cascamite with water the same way you would with a powered urea glue. I'd stick with modern urea glues.

Just off the top of my head, seems like a rigid glue would not be a good choice for veneer flattening solution. Seems like some flexibility would be desirable.

Don,

Just for the sake of discussion, why not a rigid glue? After all, not only do you want to make the veneer flat, but you want to *keep* it flat as well. The rigid glue might assist in maintaining the flatness achieved.

Unless the veneer is to be used on a curved surface, flat and rigid would appear to be desirable characteristics.

Maybe a "weak solution" of the glue is in order? That is, just enough to make the veneer pretty rigid, but not rock hard solid? Too much rigid glue would most likely make cutting, and all of the other neat tricks we do to veneer, quite difficult.

At this point consider this an academic discussion only. I have not tried this, and do not know of anyone who has.

Charles

Charles:
Thanks for the thoughts. Like you, my interest is purely academic. Cutting and handling the flattened veneer was my concern.
