On to the next project, an arm rest for my first sofa. It will be square in crossection about 1.5 x 5" there will be a 5" radius bend right where ones hand wants to be. I'm planning on using the bendy ply for the substrate. I'm also planning on putting the veneer on the same poly material I used for my recent parabolas which worked out perfect especially because I was able to sand the flat sheet before I glued it
to the curved substrate. MY question know is how to create a "beefy/durable" edge. I would like to have something like a .125 radius on my edge to 'ease' it. The veneer is Brazilian Rose Wood.
So one idea I had was to look at other dark exotics that I might be able to substitute in a .125 thick mode. Surprise, out of about 10 at my local guy,
Cocobolo was my favorite but I still not perfect & I feel a little insecure about gluing it. Then I thought about a 4 ply of BRW. I may try a sample of that to see what the radius looks like. Then I thought of putting BRW veneer over EIR or Pau ferro...
I would appreciate all thoughts and suggestions.

Mike,

Kept on thinking someone else might speak up on this one although its really subjective.

If it was me I would probably put the Brazilian rosewood on top of Pau Ferro and then give it a small chamfer which would help to hide the fact that there are two different woods.

I think the four thicknesses of BRW would look a little odd from the edge but I may be wrong.

Mike,

From left to right . photo attached.

First is solid 1/8th rosewood glued to substrate and then veneered over, then rout edge.

Second is 1/8th x 1/8th french edge which requires a rebate routed into the arm, then veneered over and routed.

Third, solid rosewood three part assembly.

Another option is to use guitar sides and bend the entire piece, then glue to the substrate. depending on where you want the joint, glue 1/8th to the sides first, then the top ,or visa versa.

Craig,
Thanks so much for your graphics. That is too cool. What is the learning curve on those kind of programs like? Just to confirm, my veneer is, BRW, dalbergia nigra. It just happens that I have some guitar sides but there is no way I'll be using it for this project. And there is no affordable solid BRW out there that I can find. I like the french edge & am considering it. Maybe East Indian or cocobolo would work there.
It also occured to me I may do it as in guitar binding, by putting a solid .125 x.250 of contrasting wood probably black or blood wood, maybe even with a piece of holly purfling
Thanks Craig & Darryl
cheers
Mike

Mike,

I really like the look of the "french edge" that Craig mentioned, didn't know that's what its called. I've seen and done it, and it looks very classy. Very attractive in black although holly could be sweet too. Wasn't sure if the contrast would be too much for your project.
