I want to use a sheet of 1/8" rubber, fairly firm on top of my marquetry panels to distribute pressure when pressing. Does anybody know where I can buy such an item?

Just Google "rubber sheets"..several distributors will pop up. Here's one for example:

I believe Daryl has mentioned natural gum rubber is preferred, although not certain.

Brent,

I use the underlayment pad for floating laminated floors. It's a type of closed cell foam that is very firm, but not as much as rubber. It's around a 1/16" thick. The advantages I found were it's cheap, compared to rubber, and commonly available at the big home stores. It also has a very slick surface on one side, that the glue, Unibond, will not stick to. The kind I use is blue.

I tried Roberts underfloor pad on my last press. What I found was that there seemed to be enough texture in the pad to telegraph onto the surface of the veneer. It sanded out and I don't think the bond was compromised. I'm going to have to use it on my pressing today because it has a few pieces of thicker veneer in the pattern so I have to distribute the pressure. I like the idea of using something other than rubber because rubber is quite expensive and I'm doing all different sizes. I wonder if roofing felt with wax paper cover might work?

I use Paul Schürch's method: canvas.
