I'm new to this forum and have picked up several tips already. Any veneering I've done in the past have been small pieces where clamping or ironing on veneer has been sufficient. Now I'm faced with a table top and the half top is 40"x27", too large to clamp and I think too large to iron on with yellow glue. It'll be a sunburst pattern in curly maple with a border.

My question is can someone in the Vienna VA area rent, or loan, me their vacuum veneer clamping system for a week or so. This is probably the only project requiring a vacuum system I'll be doing so the investment in equipment is a lot for one job. I'm a hobbyist. Renting is a win-win situation I believe if the equipment is otherwise idle. I would appreciate any other suggestions you may have. Thanks for your consideration.

If I were you, I would approach this as a situation where you will hire someone to press the piece for you.

Personally, I would never loan my bag, frame, or press to someone, or even let them use it even in my shop. The smallest pinhole could be caused unknowingly and then not be detected for months.

So maybe there is a cabinet shop locally who will take your piece, allow you to do the glue-up, but they will operate the bag/press.

Just my two cents....unless you want to invest in your own setup, you'll probably have a lot better luck with this situation.

However, consider the cost that a cabinet shop my charge, vs the price of an entire setup. Your own setup might pay for itself with 6-8 pressings.

Thanks. I hadn't thought of that.

Ralph:
Please don't try ironing on with yellow glue a sheet with many seams, like a starburst. While you might not have problems, the water in yellow glue will swell the veneer. The heat of the iron will then shrink the veneer, possibly leaning open seams. At least that was my experience with a simple bookmatch. Veneer tape was unable to hold the seam together.
If there is a woodworking club anywhere close by, you might find a hobbyist willing to press the veneer for you, if you can't find a business willing to do so.

Ralph,
It just might be a good thing this hobbyist happened along. I don't know where you are in VA, but I'm just an hour north of Baltimore, in Newark, Delaware. I have a "continuous running" pump, with a 4' X 8' bag (unused so far). The cost would be sharing some knowledge in furniture making, while we wait for the veneer to press.

I'm retired, so time isn't much of an issue for me.

Let me know,
Rob
