Anyone care to start a list of veneers one might want to avoid or at least limit use of? Candidates would be those more likely to cause allergic reactions, those most likely to require flattening, those (especially burls) most likely to have small or large defects, . . .

I'd suggest one that surprised me - jatoba or brazilian cherry. It was much much harder to sand away veneer tape residue and bleed through never was sanded away. Had to darken significantly with dark mission brown and then black Transfast, and quite a bit of bleed through glue spotting to be touched up later. Never had bleed through show up under dyes after thorough sanding schedule (80 and 150, wet to highlight remaining glue; 150 and 220, wet; 220, wet; 220 yet again).

Don,

I was running through a list of the veneers that fit into your categories and I realized these were the veneers I was drawn to use, not limit, although I understand where you're coming from.

My solution is to take precautions with the toxic ones and find ways stabilize the fragile ones so I dont have to limit my use so much.

A few of the veneers on my list would be, Ziricote, Ebony, Pau Ferro, Olive ash burl, English Oak burl, Cocobolo. I'm sure there is more but this is what comes to mind right now.

I am allergic to all rosewoods and several others, such as Pau Ferro (not a true rosewood,-- aka morado, Bolivian Rosewood, santos rosewood and several other names) padauk and ebony. I get a rash, somewhat similar to poison ivy. Bolivian Rosewood is the worst for me.

There is a site that seems to have your answers about allergens, though it isn't a complete list. I don't know who these people are, but here's their link (scroll down to see more):

In searching for a synonym for Bolivian Rosewood that I had forgotten (santos rosewood), I found this thread, posted over 3 years ago, by me.

That was interesting finding such an old post. BTW, figuredwoods is my screen name in some forums and my e-mail address at yahoo.

I will add Recomposed and or manmade veneers to the problematic pile. Not all of them are difficult, but the bleached and manipulated are the worst. I had some bleached Tay/Koto that would allow bleed thru like a sieve. And if it got anywhere near sunlight it would start color shifting immediately. One day in sunlight it would turn it from white to a straw color.

I still use some of the recomposed, but I'm very selective in where and what I use.

I haven't found an Exotic yet that I have trouble with. And speaking of Allergies, I guess I'm lucky, I've worked with Cocobolo, Rosewoods(Braz,E.Indian) Ebony, Lacewood and never had any kind of Allergic reaction. I do take precautions, dust mask cleanup after etc. It's a little peculiar since I'm very sensitive to Poison Ivy, to the point of requiring 2 wks of Steroid medication to get over it.

Am working with client considering this product for large new home. All cabinetry and millwork + many wall surfaces with panels finished in veneer. Trying to get a good handle on advising client on how much waste to expect. Have seen estimates ranging from 50% to 300%(3:1) of raw veneer to finished. From blueprints I am estimating 10,000 to 15,000 sq.ft of finished surface in veneer.

Obviously grade will be important which we will likely go with top AAA type material. Can anyone offer any advice, guidance?
