I am building a A&C design dining table. I have inlaid the aprons with copper and shell (see photo for sample piece). I want to put copper in the top which will be marquetry and quarter sawn white oak. I want to incorporate copper into the design. Here are my questions;

Can I use 22 guage, 2o 0z. copper like veneer? I am looking to put some 3/16" wide strips in as a border for the central pattern.

Can I score cut it, saw with a veneer saw? I cut the 1/16" inlay material with a jig saw, this will be too thin for that I think.

Thanks for the help on this.

Marco,

Yes, in a sense you can use copper like veneer but you cant cut it or glue it the same way. I really dont think you will have good luck with a veneer saw but I suppose its worth a try.

I assume you plan on putting in the copper inlay afterward, thats the way I would do it. The only glues that will work on copper would be polyurethane and epoxy with a good scuff sanding on the glue side.

Hope this helps.

Marco,
Another consideration for cutting would be to have the copper water jetted. simply draw the design full scale on cad in a dxf or dwg file and "beam" it to the water jet company. if i had to take a guess based on the picture I saw I'd say somewhere between 50.00 an 75.00 dollars.

Another option is to have it laser cut. cost isn't much different. If you supply a piece of plexi glass they can do a template for routing at the same time.

I thought about this, and can get it water jetted. I guess the big question then would be sanding. The inlay is on solid wood, and this will be a veneer top. I am going to do some practice pieces. I was hoping someone had already been down this road. I will keep the group posted.

Be careful if you do any sanding the metal. The heat generated from sanding will cause the metal to expand and cause the glue bond to fail. Some time ago, I tested several glues and found fish glue to stand up the best.
