I am planning out a face frame kitchen with inset mission drawer/door fronts. The face frames, rails and stiles are to be cherry, but I am having difficulty deciding what veneer to use for the panels. I would like to use an exotic or designer veneer from CW. My passage door panels were a crotch makore, but I am concerned the crotch appeal may lost due to the small panels (plus its a ton of work). My plan is to complete a few test panels, but I was hoping some might chime in with some experiences of good matches with cherry.

Thanks
Brad

Birds eye maple combines well with cherry I think. You might also experiment with some figured anigre; depending on the finishing schedule it may become too brown to match with cherry.

Brad,

I agree with Don that maple goes nice with cherry and there are so many different cuts and figure it comes in.

My other though is to see what they have in a figured cherry. I have seen, cherry crotch, curly cherry, cherry burl, cats paw cherry and more. Sometimes the sweetest combo, especially in a frame and panel door is something different in the same wood. It also strikes me that mission style is rarely done in contrasting woods, not that you cant do that, but the understated style of mission calls for a subtler look in my opinion which you would get using a figured veneer but in the same wood.

Those are my thoughts.

Don/Darryl: Thanks for your opinions. I know its a personal preference, but its always nice to hear other suggestions. I found an Anigre Burl I like quite a lot and a few good deals on some nicely figured cherry. I guess its time to order some up and give it a try.

I am hoping for a simple Target finish, but I'll have to complete some more tests.

Brad,

my two cents, for what it's worth, would be to keep it in the cherry family. Darryl suggested the gaunlet of cherry figures that would do your project well.

birds eye is a great combination but I think it lends itself more to the " contemporary craft" look rather than true mission look. mission is a true utilitarian furniture with simple lines and subtle wood figure . As Mies van der Rohe would say " less is more"

The right hardware and lighting can do more for mission cabinetry than any highly figured wood can.
