I am thinking about veneering the face of a column with maple veneer over a solid maple hardwood board as I can get a really clean face with the veneer. We would then run it on the CNC router to flute the face. Would there be any problem with this. We would use urea formeldahyde glue and put it in the vacuum press. Also I was planning on just using raw wood veneer so that when the routing is done it does not show an edge.

Dan,

I dont see any issues with this approach, I think it will work fine.

Using raw veneer makes the best sense to me as well.

I've done similar things as this on several occasions without any issues arising over time. I would balance the veneer on both sides of the solid column though, otherwise stability issues will occur. I'm curious...how "unclean" is that maple column? My first reaction was. "Is that really necessary?" Of course, the selection of a clean, white maple board could eliminate this whole veneering process. Maybe the column already exists? Maybe it needs to match surrounding millwork? Anyway, good luck.

There are 16 columns that I have to do and all are 6" wide x 8 l/f long. I have some really clean maple veneer that has no bad marks in it and that is why I thought of using it. I can do all 16 at one time as I have on of Daryl's flat flip top vacuum presses so it goes pretty quick. I will do both faces as balancing the panel is important although it may be unneccessary because they will be screwed solid to a back panel

The 16 columns along with dimensions of these make it clear to me why you would want to veneer all faces.. Color and graining would perfectly match which is always a plus. For the time and materials spent doing the back side, it's certainly worth it. Hope it turns out well.
