Every few weeks I get asked how veneer is cut from a log. Rather than spend ten minutes each time explaining how some cuts are rotary, some are elliptical, et cetera, I'd love to have some pictures of the process. W. A. Lincoln's "The Complete Manual of Wood Veneering" has some very good pictures but they are small. Does anyone have half- or full-page pictures of the different flat slicing and rotary slicing procedures? Thanks.

traditionally the photos depict how veneer is sliced in the USA. the japanese however have a whole different process.

The japanese way there is no need to soak the log in hot water prior to slicing.
