I have been using a self healing mat to cut my veneer on, when using a scalpel but today I had to cut some veneer that required a 40 inch rip style cut. This cut was way larger then my mat so I ended up using a long piece of 3/4 mdf.
What I am wondering is what do you all use??
And has anybody tried those 1 inch thick solid foam insulation panels that are for sale at the home improvement stores ??
Its like 11 dollars for a 4x 8 sheet and seems like it has enough support to cut on, just not sure if the foam would cause the scalpel blade to wander off of the cut.

Thanks
Dave

The point of a self-healing cutting mat is really just to keep your scalpel or chisel edge keen. It has nothing to do with a clean cut on the veneer.

I use a self-healing mat every time that I can, but there's nothing wrong with MDF. You will simply need to sharpen your chisel or scalpel more often than if you use a self-healing mat.

I haven't tried using insulating foam, but my first instinct is that it would not be solid or tough enough.

I would guess that the veneer would just collapse and splinter when you got enough pressure to sever it.

They make larger self-healing mats. Amazon currently has a 24x36 mat for about $25. Along the diagonal, it could handle a 43" cut.

I purchased a 36x48 mat this past year for a special project. That was about $83, but it paid for itself on one job.

Can anyone tell us where to find larger self healing mats? I'd love to start out right.
Thanks,
Rob

Dick Blick at http://www.dickblick.com/zz589/10/ has mats up to 4 feet by 8 feet if you need that much. I purchased a four foot mat and cut it to a 12 by 48 inch strip that I slid under my cut. Makes a nice cut and doesn't dull the blade.
