Subject : flatning Burl veneer

About two months ago I flattend some madrone burl veneer witha solution of
white glue, glyceren, denatured alchohol and water.
I went to use it yesterday and its full of ripples and buckles again.

Can I flatten it again using the same solution ??
How soon after flattening can I apply it to a substrate?

I dont want this to happen again, so I am figuring on pressing up about 6 or 8 sheets to some 1/4" plywood and save for later projects.

Thanks
Dave

Dave,

You can definitely flatten it again. For the most part the white glue and glycerin stays in the veneer so I would just wet it again with water. You will still need to use the fiberglass screen to prevent the remaining glue from sticking to the newspaper. As soon as its total dry you can glue it. Generally that will be six changes of the newspaper.

I'm surprised to hear the veneer didnt stay flat. As long as it is kept weighted I have flattened veneer that is still flat years later, or at least flat enough.

Darryl

Based on my experience I would guess the veneer was not completely dry. I purchased a moisture meter to check when I have to flatten veneer again.

Just to clarify, did you keep the veneer under some kind of weight after flattening?

After flattening veneer, I always store it sandwiched between some sheet stock with some weight on top.

Well Daryl, I think you hit the nail on the head. I remodeled my shop, and in doing so I had stuff scattered everywhere till I could get reorganized. In that process I left all the burl veneers I had on a work bench with no weight on them.
So it flatning time again in Texas.

Thanks all
Dave
