I am new to this forum. I finally tried my new Vacupress. Very successful first trial with Sapele thanks to Darryl's DVD's. I read some horror stories and cannot imagaine trying veneering without the DVDs. Cross cutting was a trick until I built a jig to clamp the veneer on both sides of the cut and started using the cordless saw. Someday I will have a festool, but for now Felder has been getting my dollars. I also broke down and built a router jig similar to what Darryl shows. What an improvement. Anyway, onto the question. How do people handle 18" x 12' sheets of veneer? Between getting the stock into my flat storage bin overhead and down to the table I ended up with some splits that I wasted a lot of time taping. Good experience, but I would prefer not too repeat. For my next project I would like to try a Burl, but I dont want to go through the flattening process. Suggestions?

Thanks
Brad

If you have some veneer that may be prone to split on the ends, just use some blue 3M tape horizontally to hold and prevent the splits.

Use the blue stuff. The yellow stuff is too strong and damages veneer, my experience.

Often I'll apply some blue tape to the ends of the sheets as part of the unpackaging process to try to minimize splitting. If your storage shelf is relatively high relative to your working table height, you might consider short pieces of 3/4" or 1" masking tape every couple feet along the edges to make the sheets more like a sandwich or package, providing some stiffness. I'm fortunate to have a bin on a storage rack about 35" and 48" off the floor. With a piece of 3/4" mdf (available in 10' lengths) under the veneer I can slide the entire affair onto a roll-about table and then get to the sheets I need.

You're more than welcome, and no thanks needed. As to your other question, a majority of the burl veneer I've received has needed flattening before use. I almost expect to have to flatten, then am occasionally pleasantly surprised.

Hope your experiences still positive.
