I have never veneered a panal and the veneer I bought is backed, my ignorance is going to show quickly, I have applyed boughten premaid marketry and the wood is guled down the paper removed after the glue sets. I won't mention how I know this, but a lesson learned. On this veneer I think the paper goes down but I didn't learn a thing if I am wrong.

I am planning a panel about 16X30 on 1/2" mdf with cherry veneer on both sides then capping the ends with a 1 peice molding wrapping the 4 edges. Will spray contact cement hold on this veneer when I learn which side goes toward the substraight.

I have been buying some veneer for awhile and now I need to take that baby step and use it.
Thanks, Ray

Ray,

Standard paper backed veneer is glued with the paper down into the glue. Spray contact cement will not be ideal but since I gather you do not have a vacuum press or conventional press it will have to do.

Ray:

Paper backed veneer is EXTREMELY thin, and no allowance for even moderate sanding after applied. If you would like a hardwood edging for the panel, it will be very difficult if not impossible to level the edging flush with the veneer without damaging/destroying the paper backed veneer. Would it be possible as an alternative to first glue the edging to the substrate? You could sand/plane/scrape ... to level the edging flush to the substrate, and then apply the veneer over the assembly.

If you wanted to have a routed edge in the molding, that could be done but be gentle moving the router over the paperback, especially if using contact cement.

Good luck!

Thanks for your help at least I know the paper goes down. I can build a veneer press and probably will before making this panel should I use just regular pva glue then.

Ray,

It sounds like you need some basic information and training in veneering. Here is a suggestion that was given to me by a fellow custom woodworker a number of years ago when I was new to veneering. It greatly helped me. I hope it helps you.

I would strongly suggest purchasing both of Darryl's videos. He covers lots of topics in these, including which adhesives to use and when. Seeing someone explain and demonstrate working with veneer is, at least for me, a lot easier than trying to learn about it by reading a lot of forum posts or books. I have used both of these videos and have learned a lot. And, I still watch them from time to time. They are an excellent source of information.

Yes, there is a wealth of information on this forum. And, it is a good place to visit to ask questions. I am glad you started asking. However, for a quick start, and quite thorough intro to the basics, watch the videos.

Good luck,

Charles
