I have a panel 24 x 40 that is curved at the bottom. Its made up of 3 layers of 3/8 bending ply with backer maple on the outside running perpendicular to the ply grain which leaves my outside grain running top to bottom. I want to finish veneer with Bubinga running top to bottom and have been told not to run my finish veneer with the grain in the same direction as my backer, meaning I would need another layer of backer with grain running side to side but I hate to make the sides any thicker or I will have to increase the thickness on my flat top and bottom.I've done this in the past with no problems, have I been getting lucky or is this o.K.

William,

As long as your backer veneer is standard veneer thickness, 1/32" or less, its fine to veneer in the same direction. Its the course, much thicker, sub layer that needs to be laid up perpendicular.

One suggestion though, maple is not the best backer veneer. I would use a backer grade mahogany or poplar.

maple is not the best backer veneer.

I am doing a bunch of maple work this weekend (birds-eye panels) and was planning on using "plain" maple as the backing veneer. Is maple a particular problem in the OP's case, or in general? I can't really change now, but for the future I would love to understand this part better; even in this case, I could have used a different backer so long as it was reasonably aesthetically pleasing and very light in color (the backer is visible inside). It may have been nice if my supplier might have mentioned maple as not being the best backer (I told them specifically it was for backer)...

Paul,

There are two definitions for backer and your "back side" veneer is different than what I was referring to. You want to put a plain maple on the opposite side of your panel where I was talking about a veneer that would go under a face veneer. In your case I would use maple for visual reasons.

In the case I was referring to there is no need to use maple as it will be buried.

The problem with maple is that it swells excessively when it comes in contact with glue and it is inherently resistant to glue absorption. I talk to more people with problems around gluing maple than any other veneer. This veneer, especially birdseye maple wants to wrinkle when you glue it.

The key is to move as quickly as possible once the veneer makes contact with the glue. Get it in the press and under pressure right away.

Ah, I see. I'll also make sure to do the birds-eye glue second so it will spend less time without pressure then the backer. I made up a test panel (for finishing tests) and was thinking it didn't present a problem, but then I remembered it was backed with oak (first veneer at hand).

Many thanks for the help. These kinds of details are invaluable and I greatly appreciate the insight; some lessons you have to learn the hard way, but any I can learn the easy way I am completely happy to do so.
