Hi all, I've had my first failure in 10 yrs! Gently cuved doors on a cab. bent with 1/8" bending birch and covered both sides with cherry(back) and cherry framed birdseye (front) after only 6-8 months the seams are opening up? I did not back up the veneer with another layer (which I am going to do this time). I always use unibond,,,,(maybe not enough)? The finish was oil mix and wax. Oh, and it's only one door, but I have to remake both to look the same. Thanks for any help, Dean

Dean,

Are only the seams of the veneer opening up, not around the edges? Is it just the maple or both the maple and cherry? Any delamination of the 1/8" bending birch? The bending birch I've worked with was a two ply with one thick layer and one thin. Did the maple go on the thick or thin side?

Darryl

both cherry and be are opening up. I'm not sure about thickness of bbirch, I'll have to check it out. I should cut one up and look closer. The bbirch is not delaminating just the face veneers. Just one door as far as I know. I'm going tomorrow to get the other door, so I can remake both, as the cherry is aged. Dean

How old was your Unibond?

This could be the issue.

Dean,

There are many possibilities as to why you are having bonding failure and sleuthing out the real cause can be difficult, especially when a considerable amount of time has passed.

I'll start with this. One of the most common Unibond glue failures is pressing to close to the minimum temperature requirement. Below a certain temperature you begin to get a poor bonding. The lower the temperature the more severe it gets. Of course not enough glue will obviously cause problems. Thats why I asked if both front and back side veneers were failing. Once side of bending birch is much more porous than the other.

Trying to sort out a glue problem is really better suited to an involved phone conversation. A forum is generally for simpler and more direct questions. I suggest you give me a call if you want to pursue this further.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
