I'm sure this topic has been discussed elsewhere, but here I go. A recently arrived flitch of macassar ebony has thickness variations from .005 on edge to .019 edge to edge. I understand this is likely in macassar ebony. In the past my experience in having variations like this has not been good. Hard plattens with kraft paper do not always pull the thinner material down.
Any ideas on what to fill up the space with? Would crumpled Kraft paper help?
Thanks in advance.

Tim,
Years ago, Jack Kramer, from Kramer Veneers, told me that with veneers of different thicknesses they would use layers of veneer tape or thicker paper tape to make up the diffeerences in thickness. They would do this on large hydraulic presses. I added the additional trick of using 20 or 30 mil thick vinyl sheeting on the lower face of my platten than would absord any additional variations. After pressing you just sand until you are paper free. We have used this process for years now very successfully.
Note, do not use masking tape!

Tim,

a good caul material for odd thickness veneers is 2 inch rigid foam. works like a charm. no need to round the corners the bag will do that for you when you apply vacuum.

Craig,

I always do 1/16" natural gum rubber under my top caul but have never tried the 2" building foam insulation. You are talking about the blue or pink stuff you get at the lumber yard, right? Is there some reason you use 2" over the 1"?

Sincerely

Hi darryl,

yes , the pink stuff. i got the idea from you actually. you were using it under the birdseye maple table in the video. i just reversed the concept. the 2 inch instead of 1 inch is just my over kill attitude. i wasn't sure just how powerful the press was so it was kind of "why take chances". i do a lot of table top with inlay strips in them and as you know they are always thicker than the veneer and the 2 inch foam has never failed me yet.

p.s home builders are not very concerned about waste so you can go dumpster raiding during the foundation process and you will find tons of cut offs.
