Hello,

I'm new to the forum and I apologize in advance if this has been answered already -- I have searched the forum but the majority of the posts that I found concerned dyeing veeneer prior to application and I don't *think* that I need to do that.

I am about to begin work on a dresser for a baby's room and the design calls for the side panels to be birds eye veneer dyed a vibrant color. I was planning to use BB ply as a substrate with Unibond 800 and then dye the veneer using Transtint in water.

In reading previous posts I found a few answers, but also came up with a few new questions:

1. I came across a posting on the forum wherein someone also used Transtint to dye the Unibond (I presume with the light coloer catalyst)? Seems like a clever idea, is it recommended in this application?

2. Will Unibond Blocker affect the dyeing of the veneer? Would anyone recommend using it in this application or does that depend on the answer to question #1?

Any advice is very much appreciated. This is my second veneer project, the first one having been very successful (although it was simple).

Best Regards,

Michael

Michael,

The tinting of Unibond 800 wont really be of much use in your application. The purpose doing this is to match the glue color to the veneer when using open grain woods as the glue will fill the pores. Birdseye maple is a closed grain wood so this isn't an issue.

The blocker will not inhibit your staining process at all.

Sincerely

The comment regarding dying Unibond was probably mine. In that instance I was veneering wenge, which is a very open pored wood. I wouldn't expect any need to consider dying the glue when using maple - instead, keep the glue as light as possible.

I have used Transfast and Transtint water based dyes (from Homestead Finishing, Rockler, Woodcraft, ...) over vacuum pressed veneer and never had any spots that wouldn't take the color due to glue spotting. Normal sanding of the veneer to remove the paper and level (80, 150, 220) and then wet thoroughly with damp sponge. When it dries any residual veneer tape glue will show up on the joints. I remove with 220 grit, wet again, and repeat as needed until no more residual veneer tape glue. (If working with cherry or oak, I use distilled water to minimize chance of iron/tannin staining from iron particles in tap water).

Practice on test veneered panels first, as always. Good luck.
