Subject : Pressing veneer of different thickness

I´m about to veneer a small tabletop ( 20x25" with two different veneers. One of the two is about 20 mill thinner than the other. I was considering pressing it without a caul on top, maybe just a sheet of polyethylene to protect the bag from the glue, so the bag can adjust to the various materials. Or do you think a caul is absolutely necessary.

Thanks, Frank

Without a top caul, I think glue puddling would be possible, resulting in high and low surfaces in the veneer.

The usual solution to your situation seems to be a semi-compressible material, protected from the adhesive by a plastic sheet, between the veneer and the top caul. A few months ago there was some discussion about rubber sheeting, but not rubber roofing material. Search on "rubber" and it should turn up. Another material is thick sail canvas available at www.schurchwoodwork.com under the "New Tools" link. I've used this sail canvas several times with success.

hi frank,
i would use rigid foam . 2 inch preferably. no foil face. the kind used on basement foundations. compreshion strength is great and it molds to different thicknesses. inlay srtips are always thicker than conventional veneers and we use this method without fail .

Slick idea Craig. Sheet of plastic over the veneer to keep adhesive from sticking to the foam necessary? Do you use each side once and then toss?

hi don,

no i use them for life. so far no glue has caused a problem so i never cover up the foam. i use a special glue form national casin. it is a reduced bleed thru glue with walnut shell powder in the glue.
