I´ve seen somebody mentioning on the forum that he uses Epoxy as a grainfiller. How would you preferably apply the Epoxy, which consistency would you chose? Can you still stain the wood after you´ve sanded everything out?

Frank,

I just brush it on, let it soak in a bit and the remove it with a squeegee. A good quality laminating epoxy is about the consistency of honey. West System, MAS, System 3, all have good epoxies for this application.

Sincerely

Frank:

It would be time well spent to test first on scrap material. I doubt epoxy would take either dye or stain after it is cured. With experimentation, however, you likely will find some dyes and/or stains that will color the epoxy as it is being mixed. Additions do weaken the epoxy so use sparingly, and some will appear differently after sanding the cured epoxy. West Systems used to have a document on coloring epoxy - you might email them for more info.

I've been wondering about epoxy myself lately. I just read in a luthiers forum that some are using 5 min epoxy, small areas at a time, to fill pores before proceeding to french polishing, so it should work for other finishes.
