I have a questions regarding sequencing and adhesives to be used in the making of small mitred veneered boxes. I have read that the best procedure is to make the dimensional and angular cuts; veneer the long grain and panels as normal, glue up the box and cut lid off and then veneer the exposed edges using contact cement. Does this sound right or do you have any better suggestions. Any more information regarding the veneering of the edges is most appreciated.

Thanks as always for your advice.

Dean,

I think your sequence is fine except I would use regular yellow glue instead of contact cement to put on the edging. I would put a piece of 3/4" plywood or MDF between the top and bottom parts of the box and clamp them to each other with the 3/4" material as a caul to apply even pressure on the edging.

Hope this makes sense.

Sincerely

sounds like your making a jewelry box or humidor. what i usually do is cut off the lid. i have a small slab of granite with a 120 grit wide belt sand paper glued to it. i take my cut off lid and sand it flat moving back and forth over the granite slab with the sand paper on it. this makes your top fit very nice . then i take a whole piece of veneer the size of the lid plus 1/2 inch all the way around, spread glue on just the exposed edge lay that on the whole piece of veneer and clamp the whole lid to say a piece of melamine. after the glue dries i use a laminate router to trim out the un glued veneer clean up the inside of the lid with a hard block sander.
