Hello everyone,

I just got my new Vacu Press and I would like to try and veneer some aluminum frames. Could anyone tell me what would be a good glue to use. I did a search on the forum and mostly what I seen was either epoxy or polyurethane glues, both are very messy and I'm kind of worried about getting them all over my bag and ruining it. Thanks in advance, Joe.

Joe,

Sorry to say but epoxy and polyurethane are the best adhesives for use on aluminum. Protecting your bag is really quite easy. Just get some 4mil polyethylene drop cloth plastic from the hardware store and drape it over you work before you slide it in the bag. These glues will not stick to the polyethylene at all and will protect your bag quite nicely.

Sincerely

Darryl, thanks for the help. Any type of epoxy that you know of that would work well. I'm going to attempt to bond some bubinga veneer to an aluminum frame. I had read in another thread not to use the "5 minute epoxy", I'm assuming it meant the stuff that you get at the local hardware store. Any advice will be appreciated, thanks again.

Joe,

West System, MAS, Systems 3, are all good quality laminating epoxy. West System is probably the most easily located brand usually available at any marine store and most likely at Home Depot I assume.

just a quick note about veneering anything to aluminum. be sure it has been sanded cleeeen with 80 grit then rethink the epoxy step (expansion/contraction) could be a very real problem for you in the future. You might want to look at 3M 5200 slow or regular cure. This may be ideal if you have a vacuum bag setup. try to work in a 70 degree room. warm the 5200 until it almost runs. apply a thincoat to the aluminum. attach your pruduct to the aluminum. stuff it in the bag and keep it warm 70 degrees. it takes 7 days to cure and will take seventy years to remove. I have a 48 foot aluminum boat that has several laminations like this and they are holding well Thank God. Best of luck. By the way we use aluminum for our platens in the bag some times and have little or no problen getting drip off the plate. Also Interlux 2000E primer might work well for thin veneers. it sticks to aluminum like white on rice. Don't worry about the bag getting dirty, they make new ones every day.
