Hi, I have read some of the threads about using epoxy for filling grain.
I am going to fill Mottled Anegre which seems to be very porous to begin with. I did not get much bleed through because I "sized" the wood first.
My questions are : How much pre-sanding should I do before filling?
What grit should I use to take down the epoxy after filling. (also should I give it a final sanding with 220 grit)? I worry about over sanding.
My top coat is going to be Krystal conversion varnish (S.G).

Why use epoxy as a grain filler to begin with? I'm not sure that I understand the advantages.

Why not a standard grain filler? It won't cure super-hard and require lots of sanding and levelling. I've learned many a time that the least possible amount of sanding on veneer work is best.

I am thinking of epoxy for a couple of reasons.
1.I am interested in a super smooth non yellowing finish.
2. I am a hobiest and do not have spray equipment, I take my large projects to a shop to have it sprayed, so if I can eliminate a step at home it is easier on the pocket book. I mentioned the posibility of an epoxy fill to my spray guy, and he thought it would turn out well.

If you know of another product that would work well with the Krystal Conversion Varnish I am open to suggestions. Thanks, Bob

Bob,

I would probably sand the veneer to 150 grit before applying the epoxy. As far as sanding epoxy I would first scrub with soap and water using a scotch brite pad. Then sand at 120 working up to 220 grit.

Sincerely

Thanks Darryl,
I have read the other threads in this forum on the subject and think I understand the operation. I just wasn't sure about how to sand it out.
