What is the best glue to use if you have a bubble in the veneer? Is there any reason that white or yellow glue will not work ok?I have been using these because they are less likely to show where I slit the veneer in light colored veneers. Is this what most everyone else uses? Thanks for any and all replies

Rick,

For small bubbles I use super glue in a hyperdermic neddle. The needle makes a clean little hole that doesnt stand out later and the super glue sticks to anything.

Sincerely

A slight refinement to Darryl's super glue...... After injecting the glue, you can "clamp" it flat by doing the following: Spray a piece of waxpaper with superglue accelerator and wrap it over a flat block of wood that's a bit larger then the repair. Quickly press the waxpapered block onto the veneer slit. The pressure will press the veneer flat and the accelerator will set the injected glue very quickly. I usually hold it for about ten to fifteen seconds. A clamp is added insurance but really isn't necessary. And many repairs won't allow a clamp to be easily placed.I've done this repair on finished pieces that I was installing. It is quick and leaves little trace of any damage. The flat block press makes any squeeze of glue simply blend onto the surface. On a rubbed lacquered finish a simple wipe with a gray pad will blend it all in.

How large a bubble can be repaired this way? I've just taken a large arched piece out of the bag, and when I wiped it down with water a considerable number of bubbles appeared. Two of them are two to three inches across. I knew this one might be problematic: the weather has been very hot, lessening the open time for a tricky and lengthy glue-up, and my resin (for the same reason) is starting to get a bit thicker. I'm thinking that I should chuck the piece, but it has a lot of work into it already (the core is 10 layers of rubber ply, each piece tapered on each end ... plus the beautiful curly maple veneer ... ).

And I'm also wondering about whether the super glue will show when I go to dye - EVERYTHING seems to become so visible with dyes. Anyone have any experience with that?

(Very difficult to get hyperdermic needles up here in Vancouver as well, places I tried all looked at me with disbelief when I tried explaing what I was going to use them for ... )

Any more info greatly appreciated.

Enrico

Well, I've only done the super-glue thing after final finishing. I would bet that if you did it before dying, the glue would seal the wood and prevent dye from entering. The three inch bubble isn't a problem after finish. In that case, if the glue doesn't fill the void, I simply inject more. If I were you, I'd experiment on some scrap. The syringes I use are sold to diabetics for insulin injection. Surely they are available in Vancouver.
