Subject : Thick veneer or thin ply to form 3.5" Radius?

This question is related to a thread I initiated earlier regarding veneer forms. I have those figured out and am grateful to Daryll and the others here for the help.

Now I am trying to set up the actual layers of materials to fit the forms.
The form will have a serpentine curve with two 3.5" radi.

here is a drawing of the cross section:

http://www.woodwardwoodworks.com/EILEEN_S_BAYWINDOWTOYCABINET2RADIUSFORM.JPG

The resulting serpentine panel will be about 30" long and will have the outside veneered in a cherry.

I want to lay up a thicker curved panel first. I bough some 3/8" bendable plywood but the bendable aspect of the material is 90 degrees from the direction I want. ie the ply is 2 feet wide and 4 feet long. It bends such that I can't use the ply in the 48" direction but rather the 24" I would have to laminate these in an off set manner but I'd have seems that would likely telegraph through to the surface veneer.

So my question is:

What is thickest veneer or thinnest plywood that can bend around a 3.5" radius? This material can be of any species as it serves as a base for the surface veneer. And any recommended sources?

Thanks

Alan

The only bending ply you will get around a 3.5" radius is 1/8" Italian bending poplar or 1/8" bending birch. 1/16" veneer will go around the radius but only the easy way.

When you buy bending ply, you can specify which direction you it to be "bendable". Sounds like you need the other direction from what you have.

I just tried to bend a piece of 1/8" BP around a gallon paint can (radius =3 3/8". It bent OK, but I'd say that was about the minimum radius. I heard a few "creaks" but no failure. At that tight of a radius o could get some springback.

Thanks Darryl and Mitch. I think I'll pursue the 1/16th inch veneer.

The one other method to consider is thinning your 1/8" Baltic birch down from the three plys it comes in to just two remaining plys. The bending ability is then greatly increased, and if you still need more structure you can do this twice and apply them on top of each other.
