Subject : Exterior Door - Veneer Inside

I would apprciate any opinions if my idea below is sound.

I am planning on building an exterior entrance door from honduran mahogany. I would like to apply various veneers to the inside face of the door on top of the mahogany. The extrior face will be just the mahogany. How will the veneer standup over time and seasonal changes? Is there a recommended finish?

Thanks, Jerry

Jerry,

I need a little more information about your door. Whats the construction, is it stile and rail with floating panels? What are the veneers you want to use? Are you planning to veneer directly onto the solid? As much information about the door and veneer will help me answer your question.

Sincerely

Darryl:

The door will be 8'0" x 3'0" with honduran mahogany rail and stile construction. The 6"-wide rail and stiles will be attached with mortise and tenon joinery. There will be three panels. For the panels, I was thinking edge-joined solid-mahogany stock. The panels would be atttached to the rails and stiles with bolection molding. The exterior face of the panels would not receive any veneer; this is the face I will try and match the grain patterns. For the interior face of the panels, I was thinking to veneer crotch mahogany to give a better look than have the chance of miss-matched grains. The rails and stiles will not have any veneer applied.

Instead of solid-mahogany stock, would it be better to use veneered plywood or MDF? Otherwise, if I used the solid-mahogany stock for the panels, would it be OK to only veneer the inside-face with crotch-mahogany?

Thanks,
Jerry

Jerry,

Mahogany crotch is one of the more unstable veneers and it wouldn't be wise to glue it to solid. You would really need to press it on MDF, particle board or plywood. Personally I would choose plywood since its an exterior door. If you want solid mahogany on the outside I would make two panels sandwiched together but not glued. One solid mahogany and one plywood for the veneer. As long as they're not glue to each other the solid panel can still move as it needs to.

Sincerely

Darryl:

Thank you very much for your advice. I will follow your suggestion with the two panels.

Jerry
