Can hardboard such as Masonite be used as a substrate for paperbacked veneer or should mdf be used?

I'd stay away from the masonite.

If you take a chisel to the edge of masonite, you'll see how you can literally peel it away from itself...not a good quality in a veneer substrate.

Go with MDF....my 2 cents.

Brian: I purchased some 1/8 mdf (fibrex mdf) from a plywood wholesaler but when I received it it looks just like masonite, not like an mdf board. That is why I was concerned.

Schuff,

Its hard to say which one you have without seeing it. They could have pulled the wrong material by accident. About all I can say is MDF is usually a lighter brown and Masonite a darker chocolate brown.

Like Brian said, you don't want to use Masonite for veneering.

Sincerely
