OK, so I know we need to veneer both sides, but..... I'm doing a 19x117 top of plain r oak, with a 3.5" solid front edge and it will be screwed down to cabs. I think I can get away without covering bottom??? what say you!

I probably still would do both sides, even though I think that you could probably get away with it...especially considering that you are going to screw it down.

Don't forget that there's two things happening here.....adhesives shrink slightly, causing a warp if there's no balanced shrinking happening on the other side. Second, you are creating a moisture barrier on one side but not the other.

Now even though I think that you could get away with it, here's why I would still do it. It's not that much extra work, and I keep sheets of phenolic backer for just this purpose.

Phenolic backer is basically phenolic paper without any veneer attached. It's super-cheap, and I keep this on hand for instances just like this. I would play it safe and put on a phenolic backer, and I don't have to mess with seaming veneer.

Also...19 inches is pretty wide. I think that the screws WILL hold it down, but why put the stresses on it if the solution is easy and cheap?

My 2 cents...others may think differently.

Brian, where do you get phenolic paper? What is it normally used for? Sounds like really handy stuff to have on hand. Dave

Actually, I bought some 4 x 8 sheets from a friend.

I believe that he got it from a wholesaler in Cleveland called Metal Moldings.

I'll talk to my buddy and see if I can get more details.

Dean,

Im with Brian on this one. Its really so little extra effort to press the back side as well, with almost anything. It doesnt have to be veneer.

Years ago I did a counter top pressed only one side that was screwed down to cabinets. About a month later I could see it dishing in the center. Even the customer mentioned it. Since then I have never veneered only one side again. Especially not as large as your panel.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
