Subject : Unibond did not cure...

I put a project in the bag around 8-9:00 last night.

I left my thermostat at 62, and put an electric blanket over the project.

Well, something is wrong with my electric blanket. I came into the shop this morning, and the blanket wasn't warm.

I always put a little unibond in a ziplock baggie and throw this on top of a curing project (under the electric blanket), and I'm glad that I did. When this is cured, then I know that my project is cured and it can come out of the bag.

Well, the unibond in the baggie is nowhere near cured....no surprise.

I grabbed my wife's electric blanket (promising that it wouldn't get dirty.) to get it warmed up. That was around 6:30 this morning.

So my Unibond spent around 9 hours not curing in my 62 degree shop, in the bag, full pressure. Will simply adding heat cause it to cure without any problems? Should I add some extra time to be sure?

I'm very thankful that I was taught that little trick with the baggie. Perhaps I just add heat until the unibond in the baggie is cured?

Or am I just screwed?...crossing my fingers.

Brian,

It depends on the amount of time your project was in the correct temperature range, if it was at all. Once the glue is mixed there is a "spike" so to speak in the catalytic reaction that must happen for the glue to cure as well as bond. If your blanket never came on I would guess the bond is questionable. Adding heat later may help, but not much as the important part of the chemical reaction process is over.

Be aware that your glue hardening up in the baggie, although a good test to do, does not guarantee you will have good bonding. At this point I would let the panel sit 24 hours and then try to chisel up a corner of the veneer. If it holds then your good to go. Once Unibond 800 completes it cycle, the bond you have tomorrow will be the same 10 years later. Also, wipe the panel down with water, this will test your bond as well.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Thanks, Darryl.

I put the electric blanket back on, and came back to it around 1:30 today.

There really wasn't any change in the baggie. I took the piece out of the bag, and the squeeze out was gummy, as well.

I thought that I might have to take my chances, and it was a probable failure, but I've let it sit out today, with the shop heat up to 75 or so, and the squeeze out has become hardened this evening. I took a chisel to a portion of the backer veneer, and it appears to be fine now.

I will wait til tomorrow afternoon and try some water on it to remove the gum tape. That'll be the real test. I'll report tomorrow, but it looks like a success so far.

Phew. (I hope)

Looks like everything is fine. I survived the water step, all the squeeze-out is cured, and I passed the chisel test.

Thanks again.

Well Brian, I think you're a lucky man. Unibond 800 requires a certain temperature range and Ive seen situations not as bad as yours with a failed glue bond due to insufficient temperature.

Glad it worked out for you.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
