Subject : vacuum frame press leakage?

Hello,
I have built vacuum frame press 8'x4' from particle 1 1/4" thick board with wood frame and PU foil, but I can achieve only 3Hg of vacuum. Can anybody help me?
I have 400W refrigerator pump (get full 28Hg vacuum itself) and D profile window sealer tape.
Thanks for all ideas, I have no more...

Paul,

It doesn't take much of a leak to give you very low vacuum. Its hard to give you advise when I cant really visualize how your table is set up. Are you using a closed cell material on your gasket? Whats the surface of you table covered with?

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

Dear Darryll

I made kerf saws to the top (laminated chip board)-that was the mistake I've made. I found out, that the air come from the sides, which I can't isolate. I think the best way is to glue another plate to the top and go with the airflow through. I have a sheet of acrylic glass, that should be flat enough even for the gasket lines. The gasket is closed cell PE for windows, D profile in 2 lines. Is it enough?

Regards

Paul,

Sounds like you found the problem. The way I suggest building the table surface is to have a one piece plastic laminate surface with no cuts in it. Place a second sheet on top, something like melamine coated 1/4 masonite. The grooves for air evacution are cut into this sheet. This evacuation platen is about 3" in from the table edge so the frame can seal against the laminate surface.

I think your gasket is fine as long as you can deal with the corners and the butt seam properly.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil
