Hey Darryl,

Do you or someone else have any plans to put out the authoritative book on veneering and vacuum pressing?

With new technologies in pressing and adhesives, there is a lot that could be covered, and there just is not a good and recent book out there, unless I'm missing something.

I've noticed that Taunton has a new series of "Complete Illustrated Guide" books for woodworking topics, and I really think that this topic would fit well into this series, and all of the other books in this series have been great.

Just curious...

I think we should all volunteer Darryl to Taunton for the book to end all books on modern veneering methods. Of course, Darryl would probably make more washing dishes at the local greasy spoon, but hey, I'm willing to let him make the sacrifice.

Seriously, there is no publication that covers well modern veneering practices and products. Like Brian and I'm sure many others, I'd buy such a book sight unseen, but I fear Taunton would not find the likely sales volume sufficient to make DK an offer he couldn't refuse.

Another option however would be to self-publish a pdf document or even offer as another product over the counter thru the company. I've been assembling nuggets of wisdom from the forum that I'd be willing to offer up (hell, most of my content is cut and paste from Darryl's answers to questions) and I'm sure there are several people like myself who would be willing to contribute ideas, review of work in progress, ...

So how bout it big guy - willing to give up your life for a few months? Would the kids be willing to lock you in a room with no windows for the winter?

Glad I'm too far away to be hit with a rock.

Don

Well Guys,

I appreciate your encouragement and support around a book, believe me I have thought about it.

I actually had a conversation with Taunton Press about it and this is what was said. Because there is already a book about veneering put out by them, "The Veneering Book" its difficult to justify another one. Although I was talking about one that was much more in depth, both on veneering and vacuum, they weren't up for it even though they like the idea. I understand where they are coming from. If they didn't already have a basic one I think they would jumped on it.

I will say this. I have been contemplating another video on advanced techniques for quite some time. They are such a bear to make I have really been dragging my feet for awhile, years actually. Well, last week I started on the script so I will officially say the next video as been started. Don't anyone hold their breaths, it will take at minimum a year to produce. I'm thinking more of a project video where I use an actual veneered piece and go through each component, top, apron, and legs demonstrating how the veneering and inlay work is done. At least this is the idea up front. Cant say if it will diverge from this format yet.

I'm really much more of a visual person so the video format is better for me than a book. Who knows, a book is still a solid option though.

Sincerely
Darryl Keil

This is great news and I like your idea to work through a project - it would certainly be an unique contribution to what is already available. Good luck with it and keep us posted.

Granted, "The Veneering Book" is probably the best book out there, but that isn't saying much.

It is a fine book, but it was published in '95. Lots of new stuff since then, and lots that wasn't covered in that book.

I suppose that we represent a very small market to Taunton, or other publishing houses...

Oh well, I'll certainly buy the new video when it comes out...
